Book Publishers Northwest member Chris Salditt sent in the following suggestion:
As a one-title publisher, I have been frustrated lately by how difficult it is to get reps and wholesalers to carry my book. Everything I've read warns people like me that these people do not want to bother doing business with us "one-title wonders," that it is a small payback for the effort. Do you think there is any merit in several small publishers like myself banding together, not as a publishing company, but under some umbrella of some sort, i.e., "Sound Spirit Society," "Not Ready for Big Time Players," or "The Big Fish in a Small Pond Writers Group?" (This is supposed to be funny.)
I don't know if it's doable, legal, or practical, but if it has any merit at all, then maybe there is someone out there who is knowledgeable and could speak to us about the possibility of such a venture.
Feel free to comment on this idea or suggest a possible speaker. BPNW welcomes members' suggestions for meetings.

Blogger Seeks Books to Review
Hi, I have a blog where I write about self-published and small press books. I have not worked on it for about a year because of work pressures but I am gathering up stuff to read and write about.
http://smallpressures.blogspot.com
akritenbrink@gmail.com
A person who wishes to have a book reviewed can email me for further information. One caveat -- I can't promise that if someone sends me a book, it will appear on the blog.
Angie Kritenbrink
Are you a reviewer or a member of the media? Would you like to be added to BPNW's media list to get announcements from Book Publishers Northwest or our members? Just send an e-mail to bpnwnews@aol.com

PNBA Trade Show, Sept 20-21
Approximately 400 booksellers from 140 Northwest bookstores attended the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association (PNBA) Trade Show in Bellevue, Washington. Among the many displays that the booksellers browsed were six tables of books from PMA, BPNW, and NWABP members. Many publishers also visited the display to learn how they could join PMA or the organization's Northwest affiliates.
Fifteen volunteers from Book Publishers Northwest (Seattle, WA) and Northwest Association of Book Publishers (Portland, OR) staffed the booth. It was a chance to meet old friends and make new ones. New BPNW member Michael Lalumiere (right) of Staggerlee Books came to the PNBA show to help at the PMA table and promote a new novel set at Crater Lake.
BPNW also worked with PNBA to help local members to set their exhibits near the PMA tables. Just behind the PMA exhibit, publisher Tom Blaschko discusses Idyll Arbor's latest titles. At the end of the show, the display books were donated to PNBA's Rural Library Drive, a charity that collects books for small rural libraries with little or no book-buying budget. The grateful librarians were impressed with the incredible variety of the titles that they received from the independent publishers.

Carlson in USA Today and on CNBC
Linda Carlson consults to Northwest publishers, including the 28-year-old Parenting Press, where she has handled marketing since 2000. She is the author of 11 books, a contributor to the Publishers Marketing Association newsletter, a member of the Humanities Washington speakers' bureau, and a former board member of Book Publishers Northwest. She recently spoke on PR and marketing at the Business of Books. Linda just sent us the following update on her activities
It was fun to see my Company Towns of the Pacific Northwest (UW Press) mentioned in a page 3 story in USA Today on Tuesday in conjunction with my comments regarding company towns in general and Scotia, Calif., in particular. And today I was called by CNBC and scheduled for an appearance on the morning of Wednesday, Sept. 19...at about 5 a.m. Pacific time.
The producer who scheduled me is being sent a copy of the book and she said the cover of it will be shown on air.

Member Review of New Business of Books
First let me say how much I enjoyed the BPNW publishing seminar last Saturday. I learned a lot and I am already incorporating some of the suggestions into my publishing/promotional/marketing plans.
PARA Publishing (Dan Poynter) offers newsletter space to authors who are seeking other authors to write reviews of their books on Amazon and Barnes & Noble sites. Would that be something BPNW might offer their authors? It would just be giving space for authors to list their desire for reviewers, with contact info and genre. Then interested reviewers would contact them to get a copy of the book. That way your BPNW members are getting much desired reviews on those sites, thereby improving their rankings. Is this something you might be able to do?
Thanks for listening.
(Ms.)Chris Salditt
Mother Love Publishing
Chris has a great idea. As an old PR pro, I'm a little uncomfortable with Poynter's restriction that this must be a four-star review. I think reviews should be honest--as a publisher or writer, I would want to know why a book doesn't connect with the reader. Might not agree with the review, but I would want to see it.
However, if BPNW members want to make offers to reviewers, I'm happy to post them on this website. Are there other marketing ideas that you think we should pursue as an organization? Feel free to comment below.

Sell Books at Business of Books

Book Publishers Northwest is offering you the opportunity to sell your books at the Business of Books conference. We will have a table of books set up where participants at the conference can buy books. Here is how you can sell your book there:
1. Be registered for the conference AND be a BPNW member for 2007 or 2008 (you can buy a membership there).
2. Send the name of the book, the author’s name, and the price of the book to tom@Idyllarbor.com by September 4.
3. Bring copies of the book with you to the conference. Two or three books should be enough. You’re carrying them, though, so you can bring more.
4. Pick up books that are left after the conference. We don’t have a place to store them for later pickup.
It’s that simple. We will sell the books, keep track of the sales, and mail you a check about a week after the conference. It would be sooner but I’m leaving for another conference the night of the BPNW conference.
We’re taking a 40% discount on the sale price, the same as a bookstore discount, and using the proceeds for future BPNW educational programs.
If you have any questions, please email me at tom@idyllarbor.com or give me a call (360-825-7797).

Supreme Court ruling on prices and how it affects the book industry
On June 28, 2007 the Supreme Court decided (5-4) that manufacturers could adopt and enforce "resale price maintenance agreements." In essence it means that in some cases a manufacturer can forbid discounting.
I think this is an incredibly important issue in the book-selling community with implications for both publishers and booksellers, especially independent booksellers who can't get the same discounts as the big internet retailers. If publishers are allowed to set prices, the independents will not need to compete against discounts they can't match. The publishers themselves will be in a better position to fight discount demands, too.
This affects me personally with a book (Writing for Wellness: A Prescription for Healing by Julie Davey) that is coming out in October. The book, which describes how to use a writing program as part of healing from cancer, will be sold primarily for fund raising for cancer hospitals and cancer research. As such, discounted books on Amazon.com, for example, will reduce the value of the book as a fund-raising tool. My question for you is whether the Supreme Court ruling applies to this book and how I should notify Amazon and others who are selling the book at a discount that they may not do that.
I'm hoping that the various perspectives will provide the best information on how to use this major change in the way the US does business.

Creating Buzz for Books: Contests
During yesterday's lively meeting of Book Publishers Northwest, many members discussed how entering contests can help boost a book's visibility. The most cited contest was PMA's Benjamin Franklin awards (see pma-online.org for more information), not only for their size but also for the feedback given to all entrants.
One visitor to our group commented that she was disappointed by the IPPY awards, which did not seem to include any such feedback.
We're always interested in hearing from other publishers about what works or doesn't work about entering contests.

PNBA Puts Spring Show On Hiatus
The Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association announced today that they will not hold a Spring trade show in 2008 or 2009. Plans continue for a Fall Trade Show to take place in Bellevue in Fall 2007.
"I think putting the spring show on hiatus is what the association needs right now. With two tradeshows a year, we are a Tradeshow Production Company," stated PNBA Director Thom Chamblis in the association's newsletter.
The hiatus, continued Chambliss, would allow PNBA's staff to work on new programs to increase sales for independent bookstores.

Call for PNBA Northwest New Title Preview
Dear Publishers, Publicists and Authors:
It's time for the Summer/Fall edition of PNBA's Northwest New Title Preview. If you have a title you think will be a hit with Northwest booksellers, this is a great, inexpensive way to give it more oomph.
Here's what Bloomsbury publicist Sabrina Farber has to say about the program: "I LOVE THIS PROMOTION! I think it's the smartest ABA kind of marketing tool to come around in a long, long time . . . I can't stress how effective I think this has been. I got tons of emails from stores about my titles (some stores I'd never heard of, too). Thanks for being creative w/publisher marketing dollars."
How it works: Northwest New Title Preview helps you target your distribution of free review copies of forthcoming books, ARCs, or galleys directly to bookstore buyers in the Northwest. For $120, PNBA will include your book in an online listing of new and regional titles with jacket art, a blurb, and a linked email address of the contact person at your company for bookseller requests. We send booksellers the listings, and they e-mail you to request the books.
Take a look! Last January's Northwest New Title Preview is available at:
http://www.pnba.org/NTP0107.htm.
The deadline for materials is May 4, 2007. The titles will become active on the site on May 18, 2007. An order form is attached as a pdf. I hope to hear from you soon!
Sincerely,
Larry

Google Book Search: Another Way to Promote
Google sent Book Publishers Northwest the following article about their Google Book Search service. If you try the service, we would be interested in hearing about your results. Post a comment or e-mail us at bpnwnews@aol.com
Conventional wisdom says that a reader needs to know the title of a book or some other clue to find a book on the internet. But suppose a reader doesn’t know anything about a book – or even that a book exists that matches her interests?
Google Book Search is a great way to attract new readers and boost book sales – it matches people who are looking for information with the relevant words and phrases inside your titles. By matching the content in your books with user searches, Google Book Search connects your books with the people most interested in buying them. And any publisher – large or small – can join the program to market their books for free.
Through the Google Books Partner Program, publishers send their books to Google in either hard copy or digital format. Google in turn digitizes, hosts and makes searchable every word of every book we receive. As every publisher knows, browsing leads to buying, so we've made it easy for people to browse limited previews of publishers’ books in a secure environment. When you submit your books through the Partner Program, people are always able to search the full contents of your books, but you choose how much they will be able to view -- from 20 percent to 100 percent of each title. To protect your content, your book is hosted on our secure servers, and we disable print, cut, copy and save functionality. If readers decide they want to buy a book, we make it easy by providing links to online retailers and local bookstores via BookSense. If you sell your books directly from your own website, it gets top billing, appearing first in the list of purchasing links.

Rodnik Publishes Dari Phrasebook
When Bob Powers of Rodnik Publishing said that they added a Dari phrasebook to their list, we had to ask "What is Dari?" and here's Bob's reply:
I thought you'd never ask: Dari is one of the two main languages of Afghanistan and the one spoken by most people in Kabul. It's very close to Persian, which, fortuitously, I studied for a year at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey. It helped me a lot when proof-reading the phrasebook. I chose Dari for a phrasebook because it's an instant conversation starter: "Dari? What's Dari?"
Bob is busy traveling Europe but hopes to make April's BPNW meeting. If you have news to share about new publications, just e-mail bpnwnews at aol.com. And be sure to check out Rodnik's phrasebooks at rodnikpublishing.com

Publishing Literary Fiction in Paperback
Submitted by Margaret Doyle, Port Gamble Publishing
I’ve had many great moments in publishing in 2006, and I’ve found it modestly but pervasively gratifying to see a growing appreciation for a book’s first issue to be in paperback.
In 2004, when I was making decisions about publishing the novel, The Fisherman’s Quilt, I thought about my own book-buying habits, and about the demographics of what I saw as Quilt’s readership: Boomer women who’d raised a family.
I was reluctant to pay over $20 for a hardcover book, and invariably “waited it out” until a book was available in paperback. So I decided to go with a paperback or softcover for the first printing of The Fisherman’s Quilt.
It was uncomfortable therefore to read Stephen Rea’s column in Pacific NW Booksellers’ January 2006 newsletter, disdaining first edition paperbacks, with his comments: “None of us are fooled by the phrase ‘paperback original.’ We all read that as ‘See, we paid this author a pretty good amount of money in the form of an advance, and the book wasn’t very good, so we knew we’d never recoup that cash by throwing more of it into a hard cover edition.’”
His assumption was a first edition paperback meant the publisher didn’t have the confidence in the book to issue it as hardcover first.
I want Port Gamble Publishing’s books to be read by as wide an audience as possible. Now that I know more, I will price PGPub’s books at even lower prices than Quilt, ($18.95 for 289 pages) and continue to issue them in paperback to keep the price affordable to the reader.
Since Rea’s column was written, the readers of Pages voted 47% in favor of printing literary fiction in trade paperback only. In its Sept/Oct issue, Pages published such opinions as “It [publishing trade paperback] will spark sales and more people will read these books.”
The New York Times reported on March 22, 2006, that “a growing number of publishing companies, from smaller houses like Grove/Atlantic to giants like Random House, [are] adopting a different business model, offering books by lesser-known authors only as 'paperback originals,’ forgoing the higher profits afforded by publishing a book in hardcover for a chance at attracting more buyers and a more sustained shelf life.” (“Straight to Paperback: Literary Novels” by Edward Wyatt)
As reported in the Times, some notable literary works were first issued as trade paperbacks. Jay McInerney’s Bright Lights, Big City (1984) was first released as a softcover by Vintage Contemporaries. More recently, in 1999, Jhumpa Lahiri’s Interpreter of Maladies, a trade paperback from Houghton Mifflin’s Mariner Books, won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction.
Harper Perennial, the literary paperback imprint of HarperCollins, will more than double the number of paperback originals issued, 22 this year as opposed to 10 last year.
Harper's reasoning, as reported by Wyatt in his article, was “The advantage of paperback is that if a book proves to be even a modest seller, booksellers are less likely to return all of their copies, figuring they can stock a small number permanently on their shelves, something they rarely do with hardcover books.”
In response to the article, one New York Times reader wrote back: “Where's the incentive to pay more? I buy a hardcover only if it's a book I can't live without, which usually means I've read the paperback.”
I always strive to make Port Gamble’s books absolutely flawless in text, rights, and design. And I respect the pocketbooks of my readers, not asking them to do something I wouldn’t do, namely spend more than $20 for a new book.
Books are physical objects and should be as beautiful and representative of the work inside as possible, but hardback issue for inflated profit or to satisfy someone’s vanity is not as important as making the book accessible to the reader who, we hope, will curl up with our books on their living room sofa, or throw them in a bag or on the car seat as they start on a trip, for the pleasure of reading.
This is a publishing decision I am proud of.

Promoting Spring Titles to NW Booksellers
The deadline for submissions for the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association's Spring/Summer NW New Title Preview is January 12, 2007. The program helps you target your distribution of free review copies of forthcoming books, ARCs, or galleys directly to bookstore buyers in the Northwest.
For $120, PNBA will include your book in an online listing of new and regional titles with jacket art, a blurb, and a linked email address of the contact person at your company for bookseller requests. Booksellers can then e-mail you to request the books. A submission form for this program can be downloaded at:

Taking Refuge in Renton
Here's a storm report from member Bette Filley, Dunamis House:
The good news is, we've got water and a working gas range. (But no way to wash dishes). Our yard is a foot deep in broken branches, but none broke anything or came through the house or barn on the way down. Darn! And we just finished cleaning up all the broken branches from the storm of December 26, 1999.
The bad news is we've got no electricity, no phone service, no cable or internet service. The house went from Warm and Christmassy to bitter cold, dark, and clammy. Several trees are lying across the road coming toward our place, and when they fell, they took the phone poles with them. the street is a jumble of cables and wires.
Our daughter east of Renton got her power back today (day 4), so we've all barged in on her with our empty tummies and dirty laundry.
The power company says they still have 200,000 customers to go, and they're out of telephone poles. They're got to bring in more from out of state, and we may be out of luck until after Christmas!
Hope all is well at your house. Count your blessings, and have a wonderful Christmas.

Storm Swamps Kirkland Bookstore
From Paciic Northwest Bookseller's Association, we received the following report.
Just weeks after celebrating their 20th Anniversary, Parkplace Books in Kirkland, Washington experienced a devastating flood in this past week's rain and wind storm. Overflowing storm drains drenched the bookstore and a dozen other businesses on Thursday, Dec. 14th, with over 4 inches of water filling the store, rushing in through doors and walls. Relief was hampered by the high winds, which knocked out power all over the Eastside. Downtown Kirkland remained without any power for several days, making it all but impossible to use pumps or dryers to try to save merchandise. Owners Mary Harris and Rebecca Willow are still assessing the damage; carpets have already been pulled up, but the walls must still be dried out before fixtures can be replaced. The store's computers remain operable, and with the restoration of power, the phones are working again. Despite the damaged floors and watery smell, the store will be open for business again on Monday, December 18th, in hopes of salvaging some holiday sales. Says Harris "We even had some sales on Saturday, with customers sloshing about in the dark."
Sales reps wishing to donate books to help replace lost inventory can bring or ship directly to the bookstore, as traffic to the Eastside should be back to normal after Monday.

November Meeting: netGalley.com
The meeting topic for November has changed. Local software developer Ted Treanor will be our guest speaker. He will be discussing netGalley.com, a new online community launching in November for authors, publishers, book reviewers, bookstores, and librarians. Under development for the last six years, this new site will use the latest Web technology to allow publishers to build a network of reviewers, bookstore buyers, and librarians who want to receive their galleys in digital or print form.
Treanor has worked with a wide variety of publishers, authors, reviewers, librarians, and bookstore owners to help form a web service that will provide a more effective way to deliver galleys to reviewers and market books to stores and libraries. Don't miss our last meeting of 2006 at the Good Shepherd Center, 4 pm to 6 pm, on Nov. 16.

Book Publishers NW at PNBA
The Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association Fall trade show drew approximately 355 exhibitors to the Oregon Convention Center this October. Book Publishers Northwest displayed more than thirty of its member’s books at this trade show. For the first time, BPNW allowed books to be ordered on site, but this resulted in only a few sales. Most interested booksellers made notes, and picked up brochures and postcards as a reminders, then intended to order from their distributors.
BPNW volunteers worked on the exhibition floor Thursday evening setting up tables for BPNW and for PMA/Independent Book Publishers Association. Books were flying everywhere but by Friday morning each table was beautifully arranged and well staffed.
BPNW volunteers had opportunities to interact with 78 librarians and 390 booksellers representing about 126 stores from the region. Floor traffic both days was disappointing and exhibitors perceived a much lower attendance versus past years. However, many reported that people spent more time talking books at booths compared to years when the floor was jammed.
BPNW volunteers staffed both the BPNW and the PMA booth with enthusiasm. Representing the association were Lani Jacobsen (74th Street Productions), Peter Kahle (74th Street Productions), Jan Walker (Raven Publishing), Diane Kinman (Wimer Publishing), John Diviny (Wilder Productions), and Margaret Doyle (Port Gamble Publishing). In addition, BPNW sister association in Oregon, NWABP, provided help, experience and good will from members Marvin Mitchell, Barbara Whittaker, and Linda who all did double-duty staffing the PMA booth and their own adjacent table.
At the conclusion of the show, remaining books were donated to the Hooper Bay Library and the White Mountain Library in rural Alaska – both totally destroyed by fire this year. This was a satisfying and warm finish to a warm October weekend.

"With so many books out there vying for bookseller's attention, this program has really worked to highlight titles and guarantee that store buyers see your book at the show and stop by your booth to talk about it.
BuzzBooks is also a real advertising bargain, as you will receive nearly $1,000 worth of exposure for only $400.
PNBA ust need your sign-up sheet and payment by September 1. We will send you a confirmation explaining what advertising materials we need to have before the show in October."

Planning Ahead: Start Now for October Show
Besides displaying and sellling your book at Book Publishers Northwest's table at the PNBA Fall Trade Show, there are also a number of ways to promote your books to the booksellers attending the show. Deadlines are approaching fast (reservations for the BPNW table needs to be done by Sept. 1), which makes August the month to plan.
Also mark Sept. 21 on your calendar for BPNW meeting on maximizing trade show experiences. Jeff Backstrom of Skyline Pacific will lead a seminar on how to work out the cost effectiveness of a trade show, how to display your product to the best advantage, how to make the best use of contacts made at a show, and more. The meeting will take place at the Good Shepherd Center from 4 pm to 6 pm.

Please contact Jamie Pasaro for further information on the PNBA Fall Trade Show (contact information shown below).
NORTHWEST NEW TITLE PREVIEW
Target your distribution of forthcoming books (ARCs, galleys, finished copies all work) directly to bookstore buyers in the Northwest through PNBA's Northwest New Title Preview. For $100, PNBA will include your book in an online listing of new and regional titles with jacket art, a blurb, and a linked email address of the contact person at your company for bookseller requests. The next listings will go up in September. Deadline is September 1 for payment and materials. For more information on New Title Previews, e-mail brian@pnba.org.
STUFF-ITS
You produce flyers and PNBA stuffs them into the canvas bags that they distribute to the first 250 booksellers on the exhibit floor October 13 (BPNW members displaying at the BPNW table will be listed on the BPNW stuffer). Flyers and payment of $100 are due by October 6 for inclusion in the show bag OR send 150 copies and payment of $100 by September 22 for inclusion in the packet sent to pre-registered booksellers. A form for this promotion is available on the tradeshow page of the PNBA website.
SHOW PROGRAM
Promote author signings or tradeshow exhibits through an ad in the PNBA show program, which gets mailed to pre-registered booksellers before the show and gets distributed on the exhibit floor to everyone attending the show. Rates range from $200 for a 1/4-page ad and $600 for a full-page ad. For a list of all of the rates, go to the PNBA advertising rate card. The deadline for materials and payment is September 1.
BUZZBOOKS
For exhibitors only: BuzzBooks is a new PNBA program that works like a scavenger hunt on the exhibit floor Friday. Since booksellers must meet with each BuzzBooks publisher at the show in order to be entered into a drawing to win some nice cash prizes, the program creates enthusiasm for participating books/authors/publishers before, during and after the show.
Each BuzzBook package costs $400 and includes:
• a chance to win Biggest BuzzBook of the show
• a prominent display at the show
• a posting on PNBA’s BuzzBooks webpage
• booksellers required to talk to you or your rep about your book
• promotion in pre and post-show newsletters
• promotion in the show program
• one free Stuff-it insert (a $100 value, these are inserted in the canvas bags distributed to booksellers on Exhibit Day One)
• an announcement at the Author Feast
• post-show press release with announcement of winner to PW, Shelf Awareness, Bookselling This Week and other book media
The BuzzBooks form is availableas a downloadable PDF.
