Edible Book Fair Returns to Seattle

Seattle once again hosts an event tied to The International Edible Book Festival -- a world-wide event "for bibliophiles, book artists and food lovers to celebrate the ingestion of culture and its fulfilling nourishment."

The 2009 Seattle Edible Book Festival will help raise money for Seattle Center for Book Arts.

This year's Seattle Edible Book Festival will take place at the Good Shepherd Center between noon and 1 p.m. on April 4, 2009.

Scallops & Science: You Are Invited to a Party!

We are a nonprofit in Seattle dedicated to science writing and our members are writers, editors, bloggers, authors and public relations folks.

Our big annual party is Jan. 22 at the Seattle Aquarium. We have a big venue, so we can invite everybody and want to include your members.

A Report on Publishers' Props

Last spring, members of Book Publishers Northwest were asked if they could contribute letterhead and envelopes as props for the movie World's Greatest Dad. Here's a note from Lisa De Alva on this film.

It's been a while since I first contacted you for help with props on "World's Greatest Dad" and I wanted to send along some good news: "World's Greatest Dad" has been accepted to the Sundance Film Festival!

Unfortunately since the movie has been edited in Los Angeles, none of us here have seen a finished cut, so I'm not sure how many of the publishers who so kindly helped us will see their names, logos or stationery used, but I'm hoping for a good showing!

I wish all of you a very Happy New Year and thanks so much again for participating in our movie!

A Modest Proposal, or A Little Summer Fun

Noting that Book Publishers Northwest (BPNW)'s shared display with the Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA) and the Northwest Association of Book Publishers (NWABP) at the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association (PNBA) Trade Show would be the BPNW/IBPA/NWABP display at PNBA, member David Ash of Basho Press made the following modest proposal:

I propose that we should all merge and change our name to the Society of Western Educational, Entertainment, and Trade Book Independent Progressive Publishing Yahoos, or SWEET BIPPY for short. It would make walking into an industry cocktail party much more interesting if that were on our name tags!

However, IBPA member Mary Shafer of Word Forge Books responded:

I agree that it would be interesting — but wouldn’t this be the cause for much unauthorized gambling? Because I can just see it now: everyone wanting to “bet their SWEET BIPPY” on something. And what kind of consternation might it cause if a member were to win one of the Independent Publishing awards? Can you just hear it? “We’re proud to present this year’s IPPY to someone from SWEET BIPPY!” And God help us if that winner just happened to be from Mississippi...

Seattle Storm Promotes Reading at SAM

The Seattle Storm and the Seattle Art Museum are teaming up to promote reading at a special event August 13.

Seattle Storm star players Sheryl Swoopes and Katie Gearlds read works about the Impressionist art movement during this afternoon event for kids age 5 to 19.

Graphic Artists' Summer Party

It's summer and it's time to have some fun. The Seattle Graphic Artists Guild is hosting a FREE Bad Art Party on Weds., July 16, 6-8 p.m. for Guild members, not-yet members, and their friends. At beautiful, parklike South Sound location, 20 minutes from downtown Seattle, the Guild will supply tasty snacks, wine and soda, cool prizes and some art supplies: gluesticks, glitter, macaroni, and paper to mount what they hope will be messy bad art pieces.

Patry goers should bring paper, scissors (but no rocks!), and magazines to cut up, and as well as any other art supplies desired.

Showcase Tacoma Looking for Poets

The 3rd annual Showcase Tacoma will be held in downtown Tacoma on Friday and Saturday, August 8-9, 2008.

Anyone interested in hosting an organized group reading, a writers workshop, a poetry open mike, a spoken word performance or poets wishing to read live should check the application at www.showcasetacoma.org. Deadline is

Printing with a Steamroller

For the fourth year, King's Books in Tacoma presents Wayzgoose, a gathering of local letterpress printers and book artists celebrating Small Press Month.

These artists will be on hand to demonstrate how books and other fine printing was made before computers.

The organizers also promise Steamroller Printing with a real steamroller! Visit King's Books on March 2 from noon to 4:00 p.m. to find out how you print with a really big industrial truck.

Come one, come all, to the Annual Graphic Artists Guild Festive Holiday Party and Portfolio Extravaganza! The Guild is pulling out all the stops this year and having an event to remember, and celebrating the National Guild's 40th Anniversary, too!

Bring your portfolio (sorry, no internet access) for folks to look at and admire if you'd like, grab your reindeer sweater and light-up earrings and prepare to party. It'll be the meet and greet event of the season. This year, to make the holiday spirit more real, we are accepting cash or check donations for Northwest Harvest. Do not bring food, please, just cash or checks. Let's share our blessings.

The Guild will offeran assortment of yummy finger foods, a no-host bar, and you can participate in the Ornament Exchange (optional). If you'd like to join the game, bring a creative or gorgeous WRAPPED ornament, costing under $10, for a very enjoyable holiday amusement. You're sure to go home with something wonderful if you play, according to the organizers.

And there's more! There will be a prize (rumor has it that it's a box of fine chocolates) for best holiday garb, so deck yourself in something festive and and party with the artists on Wednesday, December 5, 5:30 at the Rock Salt Grill.

Cheap Wine and Poetry, November 8

With $1 glasses of wine and an open microphone, "Cheap Wine and Poetry" attracts standing room only crowds of poets, writers, artists, art lovers, literati, students, hipsters, cheap wine lovers, furious knitters, and the occasional dog, according to our friends at Richard Hugo House. The series features local and national artists and writers, many published in the print publication when it rains from the ground up.

Series curator Brian McGuigan will read at the next "Cheap Wine and Poetry" on Thursday, November 8, 2007, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Richard Hugo House. Also expected that night are poet and performer Rajnii Eddins, fiction writer Chris Leasure, and Ryan Boudinot, author of “The Littlest Hitler.”

Although admission is free, donations are welcome. Open mic sign-up is at the door. Hugo House is located at 1634 11th Ave., Seattle, WA.
